Whydah: Feared, Wrecked & Found

What better way to celebrate “Talk Like A Pirate Day” than with a talk on pirates? Eye patch & parrot optional.

Renowned author Martin Sandler tells the exciting true story of the captaincy, wreck, and discovery of the Whydah — the only pirate ship ever found — and the incredible mysteries it revealed. The 1650s to the 1730s marked the golden age of piracy, when fearsome pirates like Blackbeard ruled the waves, seeking not only treasure but also large and fast ships to carry it. The Whydah was just such a ship, built to ply the Triangular Trade route, which it did until one of the greediest pirates of all, Black Sam Bellamy, commandeered it. Filling the ship to capacity with treasure, Bellamy hoped to retire with his bounty — but in 1717 the ship sank in a storm off Cape Cod. For more than two hundred years, the wreck of the Whydah (and the riches that went down with it) eluded treasure seekers, until the ship was finally found in 1984 by marine archaeologists. The artifacts brought up from the ocean floor are priceless, both in value and in the picture they reveal of life in that much-mythologized era, changing much of what we know about pirates.

Known as a fun and engaging speaker, Mr. Sandler is the author of Imprisoned, Lincoln Through the Lens, The Dust Bowl Through the Lens, and Kennedy Through the Lens. He has won five Emmy Awards for his writing for television and is the author of more than sixty books, two of which have been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Among Sandler’s other books are the six volumes in his award-winning Library of Congress American History Series for Young People, a series which has sold more than 500,000 copies.

Nautilus Live: Underwater Exploration
($5 suggested donation goes to Nauset Regional Middle School Education Foundation)

Deep beneath the surface of the ocean are remnants of an ancient world and creatures that you’ve never dreamed of. Join Amy Fleischer, a local science teacher, as she relates her 22-day voyage on board Dr. Robert Ballard’s Exploration Vessel Nautilus this past July. Amy will share the stories and videos from the exploration of ancient submerged shorelines, sea caves, and relic coral reefs, as well as encounters with sharks, rays, whales, sea lions, fish, and an incredible array of invertebrates. You will also interact live with members of the Corps of Exploration currently on board the ship through the magic of telepresence. Equipped with the Remotely Operated Vehicles Hercules and Argus, a prototype Autonomous Surface Vehicle from the University of New Hampshire, and new mapping technology from the University of Rhode Island, Nautilus is exploring the depths of the ocean including the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of southwestern California.
